EXCLUSIVE! NAMM 2013: Decksavers for lots of new controllers!

As sure as manufacturers pump out a realm of new controllers at one trade show, you just know that in hot pursuit are Decksavers. And NAMM 2013 is no exception with a bunch of new covers to keep your expensive purchases safe.

I can’t stress enough just how good these things are. Some might wince at the price, but when you’re rushing to get to your gig and knock a can of Coke into your expensive DJ tool, you’ll wish you’d spent a few quid, euros or dollars on some valuable protection. Let he who has no spilt cast the first flame.

Here’s the list and the UK prices:

Exclusive Pioneer DDJ-SX Serato DJ Controller First Look

Pioneer's platinum

Pioneer is always the talk of trade shows, with a flashy booth, heavy electro and all their shiny toys floating around. This year was no exception. There weren’t any new products, but we did get some pictures of the very sleek platinum CDJs, DJM mixer and RMX-1000, and I got on the DDJ-SX for a little and had a go at Serato DJ.

I have to say, my general hesitance of new Serato releases has wavered a little. The software is still cluttered, but the controller has a really smooth layout. Finding things is easy, and navigating is much simpler than I was expecting.

The WeGo is also going to be compatible with Serato DJ. I didn’t have a chance to get my hands on it with Serato DJ, but did get to play with the WeGo for the first time. I’m not a huge fan of Pioneer MIDI controllers, but for a basic, entry level unit it is very clean and well laid out. I’m interested in how it handles the extra features of Serato DJ, but I’ll get an update to you all once I can get a chance to play with it.

All in all Pioneer’s offerings are very similar to last year, but I think it’s more a reflection on the changing markets than anything else. NAMM is not the hotbed of new gear it once was.

A little extra comment from Mark Settle

I was intrigued to see the Platinum limited edition range announced. The obvious comments of fingerprint magnet appear to be quite founded looking at the photos. But it’s the way light interacts with the Chrome that most interests me. The original renders give these units a fairly even reflective coat. But in reality the Chrome parts pick up whatever environment they find themselves in.

In this case, the Platinum parts pick up the dark ceiling of the conference centre, giving the gear a distinct two tone feel. In a different place with mad lighting going on, the effect is likely to be entirely different. Just remember to bring your can of Pioneer polish with you.
